Wet Pendulum Slip Testing
Wet pendulum slip testing is one way to assess the slipping potential of a flooring surface. This test measures the amount of friction a floor surface provides, and can be used to determine the level of safety for both wet and dry flooring. The pendulum slip test uses a weight attached to the end of the swing arm. This technique reproduces the impact of a human heel hitting a wet floor.
The rubber heel is loaded with springs and released from the pendulum before the arm hits the floor. The distance the arm travels after impact determines the level of impact and how much slipperiness there is in a surface.
Dry Floor Friction Testing
Dry floor friction testing is important for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it helps ensure that a facility has a minimum slip resistance to prevent falls and accidents.
The Tortus floor slip resistance test device is a popular tool for this purpose. This portable friction tester measures the force required to pull a standardised Four S rubber slider across a floor surface at a constant speed. It also measures the average horizontal and vertical forces. It is often used in undercover public areas and shopping centres to determine if a floor surface has slip resistance.
Slip Testing FAQ
Why Do I Need Slip Testing?
Slip resistance is a measure of a surface’s ability to resist slips, falls, and other accidents. Slip resistance can be measured in many different ways, including using a pendulum or ramp test. A slip resistance value is a reliable indicator of the risk of slipping on a surface.
Slip accidents can be incredibly harmful and often result in fatalities. Because of the severity of slip accidents, employers and property owners should never take slip resistance for granted. Performing slip tests is an essential part of any health and safety management plan. Without it, you may face increased insurance costs, and you may even have trouble getting insurance coverage if accidents do occur.
Which surfaces are best for slip resistance?
Slip-resistant surfaces can be made of a variety of materials, including wood and steel. Wood and steel are generally rougher than concrete, making them less prone to slip. Aggregate is an essential ingredient in concrete making a slip-resistant floor. The larger the aggregate particles, the better.
Tile is another material to consider, as it can reduce the risk of slipping. The surface texture of a tile can be important for slip resistance in a wet area, and a smaller tile will allow more drainage. Larger tiles may be slippery due to planar variations. A polished finish also creates a smooth surface, but this isn’t recommend this type of flooring for wet areas.
Who organises floor slip testing?
Slip testing is critical for commercial buildings. Slip testing services are requested by property managers, OHS Managers, architects, construction companies and flooring suppliers. A great deal of time and money may be wasted on an insurance claim if testing suggests that flooring was safe for pedestrian traffic. So slip testing services are often called upon for expert witness evidence as well as preventative safety measures.
